Bed & Breakfast
We welcome you to our farmhouse home to stay bed & breakfast for a really special historic experience, peaceful, tranquil and relaxing. The farmhouse dates back to the 15th century and has a small Chapel of Ease on the site, originally built for private worship. However, it is thought that there was an earlier dwelling of some importance dating back to 850AD on the site, possibly the Manor of Bossington!
The farmhouse itself is built in typical Open Hall design, when a fire would have been lit in the centre of the large hall room, and it displays smoke blackened beams in the roof of the house. There are very few of these Open Hall houses still in existence, and many fascinating archaeological features still remain. There is an air of warmth and homeliness about the farmhouse, which provides peace and tranquility to all who stay.
The house is surrounded by a collection of thatched and ancient tiled buildings forming three sheltered courtyards which house our animals in various stables and barns, including a large Threshing Barn and Horse Engine Roundhouse. Some of these barns also date back to the time the house and Chapel were built and have amazing round pillars, open upper floors and large thatched roofs.
The old vegetable garden provides more sheltered accommodation to our beautiful collection of owls from around the world, and we now call this our “Owl Garden”. We have recently planted this Garden as an arboretum or native trees around the aviaries, and flowering ornamental trees in the centre of the garden, with a corner developed as a wildlife refuge and pond – indeed safe have attracts species such as great crested newts, hedgehogs, slowworms, local wild owls, foxes, badgers, stoats, weasels, and much more. During your stay you may hear the owls calling to one another, or to the many visiting night-time visitors in the gardens. Truly a wildlife haven for all!
Our rooms are homely and spacious, providing comfort and warmth, in keeping with the character of the six hundred year old building. You can stay in our double, triple, twin, or family room, each with private bathroom or en-suite facilities. They are each well equipped with tea making facilities, tv, wifi access, and a wealth of books scattered around the house, mainly on owls, birds, animals and horses and local bits and pieces! The comfortable beds have luxurious goose down duvets to snuggle into, and soft down pillows for a good night’s sleep.
We offer a full English breakfast, or a continental of your choice, along with cereals, fruit, yoghurt, breads and toast, fruit juice, free range eggs, home made marmalade, and hot drink of your choice including a wide range of herbal and spice teas. During the day you may stay to enjoy our mid-day sandwich menu or take a packed lunch, or afternoon cream tea and delicious cakes.
Situated very close to Porlock village there are a number of eating places, and three pubs that all provide excellent food and good watering holes!
