Exmoor Memories: Exploring Exmoor….

I first went to Exmoor as a teenager with my parents staying at Porlock Caravan Park: I remember hearing the sheep in the field next to the caravans. 25+ years later I was back camping with my husband and dogs at the same site. We holidayed in and around Porlock most years since and will be spending Christmas there this year. We love the scenery, the peacefulness and the wildlife – it’s a perfect place to unwind, enjoy the fresh air and appreciate how beautiful the area is. Favourite walks include Dunkery, Watersmeet, Valley of Rocks, Tarr Steps, Horner Water, Porlock Weir to Culbone, up and around Hawkcombe, and last year we found Bats Castle. This was a stunning walk up and over the grounds of the castle until you reach the old settlement. Up here you can see for miles. We came across Red Deer and Exmoor ponies. It was quite a steep descent in parts especially with an eager terrier and two Lurchers who all have keen noses! The dogs enjoyed being able to cool off in the river at Gallox bridge before we got back to the car. The area is perfect for dogs, it doesn’t bother us or our dogs that they need to be on lead in certain areas, they get plenty of exercise and stimulation from the new places and smells, we are all ready to relax after a day out exploring Exmoor.

Become an Exmoor Patron!

We are looking for Exmoor Patrons who can help us keep Exmoor4all going and provide us with the opportunity to develop our platform even further.
For a monthly contribution you will receive rewards, from DJ Miles Tea & Coffee to special access to information and even a personalised 5* trip to Exmoor.  And you will play a significant part in developing Exmoor4all and events like the Exmoor Food Fest.
Here is our story:

Exmoor4all started in 2012 on Facebook and Twitter as a community platform for locals and visitors and everyone else in between and beyond who love Exmoor, the small National Park straddling Somerset and Devon in England’s South West.
Over the past five years, Exmoor4all has grown to a website, an online shop, community events and, of course, other social media platforms.  It is taking a lot of time and love and dedication to build up the community (we reach regularly up to 150,000 people per week, and 75,000 people engage with us on Facebook alone)  and this is why we’re on Patreon:

The Background Story
My name is Elke Winzer.  I am a single mum with two staaaaarving teenage boys and four dogs. I moved to Exmoor from Germany over 15 years ago, but fell in love with the area a very long time before then.
My background is in Public and Cultural Relations.  I published three books in my previous life in Germany (under my author name Elke Koessling), and have worked as a promoter for musicals, organised concerts, and explored the world as a travel journalist amongst many more things.

I started Exmoor4all in 2012 as an online community which connects people from all over the world in their love for beautiful Exmoor. We help local businesses promote their products, publish information about events, and, increasingly so, provide a calming refuge from a scary world out there.

Five years down the track we know that people love what we do.  Constant engagement, production of outstanding posts and products, and the provision of assistance (when dogs get lost or owners of cows have to be found) take a lot of time.  It is easily a full-time job which so far has been subsidised by taking on “normal” jobs.  It would be great if – with your help – we could run Exmoor4all full time and provide even more ‘customer service’ than before.

You can  become an Exmoor Patron for as little as £0.80 per month (Patreon operates in US$, but of course your subscription is in GBP if you live in the UK) – and any contribution is not only much appreciated, but also comes with rewards to our patrons.

To find out more, please pop over to our Patreon site and have a look at all the tiers and rewards available:

A Walk in the Woods

Horner Wood is an ancient wood pasture on the National Trust’s Holnicote Estate. Some trees are up to 500 years old. It is the habitat for an abundance of wildlife and could tell many stories.  You’ll see pollarded oak trees on your walk through the woods and hopefully spot some Red Deer. Horner Wood used to provide locals with fuel, winter fodder and wood for their tools. Today it is a perfect place to get away from it all.

Exmoor Stories: A little bit of magic

I went to Lanacre with my 3 year old. I told him to sit quietly and just watch the ponies. Soon this foal’s gentle curiosity got the better of him as he approached this little human and literally softly brushed against his head. It was pretty special and my little boy giggled with delight. Of course I was very close by my little boy and watching the foal very carefully..but this little foal was just curious about a child..that was clear. As soon as I moved it was off in a flash back to Mum’s side.

Saturday Collection: #WeLoveExmoor

In addition to our Exmoor4all Facebook page we also have a FB group which we use to run photo competitions.  Fortunately many of the photographers who share their stunning photos with us continue to post in this group even after the competition has long finished.  Here are the images which were posted in the past ten days:
