EXCEPTIONAL AWARD FOR CALVERT TRUST EXMOOR

Calvert Trust Exmoor were delighted to receive SSAFA’s Exceptional Award at the Forces Additional Needs and Disability Forum (FANDF) in MOD main building, Whitehall  earlier this week. (Monday 20th June).

FANDF supports service families to ensure that both children and adults with additional needs and disabilities have access to the best support available.

 Membership of FANDF is open to;

  • Parents of children with additional needs and disabilities form Service families.
  • Partners/spouses of Service personnel with a disability
  • Service personnel with a disability
  • Carers

Tony Potter, CEO of Calvert Trust Exmoor, received the award on behalf of the trust from Iza Gill, Chair of FANDF.

After the award was presented Tony said ; “We are honoured to receive this Exceptional Award in recognition of our continued commitment and support of SSAFA short breaks, providing support to families with disabilities from across the Armed Forces. It’s particularly important to us that it was the families themselves who voted to recognise us with this award.”

Calvert Trust Exmoor has been working with SSAFA for over 10 years, providing breaks for children with additional needs and disabilities, and their families. SSAFA award only one Exceptional Award a year.

Calvert Trust Exmoor is the South West’s premier holiday destination for people with disabilities, and the only 5 star accredited activity accommodation in the country. We welcome over 4,000 residential guests and 5,000 day visitors a year with the philosophy of “At Calvert Trust Exmoor it’s what youCAN do that counts”. This sums up our approach to what we do, we help people of all levels of ability to fulfill their potential and be all that they can be.

Date for the Diary: Eat Dirt on Exmoor

Calvert Trust Exmoor is running a Mountain Bike Event on Exmoor on 2 May. There are two routes on offer:  25 miles and 15 miles.  The Start and finish is at Dulverton.  The main route runs up the Barle Valley, crosses over Tarr Steps and climbs up to Winsford Hill, and then down the Exe Valley to Dulverton.  This is wonderful country and promises to be a great ride. Calvert Trust Exmoor is very pleased to have been awarded Gold in the “Access for All Tourism Award” category and Highly Commended in the “Tourism Experience of The Year” category at the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2014, which took place at Cheltenham Racecourse last night.

 

Calvert Trust Exmoor is a charity running a fully accessible 60 bed residential outdoor activity Centre catering for people with physical, sensory and learning disabilities of all ages and levels of ability, together with their families, friends and carers.  Activities on offer include canoeing, sailing, horse riding, wheelchair abseiling, accessible cycling and archery. Over 3,600 guests took a residential break with Calvert Trust Exmoor last year.  A further 5,000 visited for day activities.

Calvert Trust Exmoor was the only organisation in the country to be a finalist in two categories at last night’s awards, and is also the only Visit England 5 star accredited activity accommodation in the country.

Tony Potter, Chief Executive of Calvert Trust Exmoor; “This is fantastic news that recognises the consistent hard work that all of the Calvert Trust Exmoor team put in to deliver an excellent experience for all our guests.  The South West had a very strong showing last night; it’s been a privilege to be a part of the South West success at these prestigious awards,  to fly the flag for the disabled community and for that to be recognised at national level!”

Commenting on the Award James Berresford, VisitEngland’s Chief Executive said “We received hundreds of applications of an exceptionally high quality making the competition for a Gold Award extremely tough.  It is therefore a tremendous achievement for Calvert Trust Exmoor to win a Gold Award, the highest accolade for Excellence in Tourism which VisitEngland can bestow.  They have raised the bar for excellence for others to aspire to and I warmly congratulate them on their exemplary contribution to tourism in this country.”

This national award is the culmination of a run of awards for Calvert Trust Exmoor in the last few months, from Gold in the Visit Devon Awards in November 2013, a 1st place and “Winner of Winners” in the North Devon Business Alliance Awards in December, and then two Gold’s and ‘Winner of Winners’ in the South West Tourism Awards in January.

Date for the Diary: Easter Family Activity Day at Calvert Trust Exmoor

Calvert Trust Exmoor Logo RGB SquareOn Friday 21st of April Calvert Trust Exmoor are holding a family activity day, open to everyone with or without a disability, for just £2 per activity, or 6 activities for £10.

Drop in anytime from 9:30am – 2pm to enjoy various activities including archery, giant swing, abseil, climbing and carriage rides. (Activities will start at 10am and be available until 3pm; last admission for new visitors will be 2pm).

Refreshments and snacks are available on site, or why not bring lunch and enjoy a picnic beside beautiful Wistlandpound reservoir?

We ran two open days in 2013 and they proved to be really popular; so much so we are planning three open days this year.
